Midnight Alibi

Midnight Alibi / Challenges

The four challenges

When you open a new case, you can choose Normal or take on a challenge. Meet the challenge and you earn a bonus rank point. If you break it, the case carries on as a normal case.

  • Cold Case

Solve it without a single hint, nudge or check.

Asking for a hint, a nudge or a check ends it. You’re warned first.

Meet it on 10, 25 and 50 cases for Cold Blooded: Frost stamp at bronze, Frost ink at silver and Glacier at gold.

    Opens at Private Eye

  • Against the Clock

Close the case before the par time runs out.

The timer counts down to par. It only runs while the case is on screen.

Meet it on 10, 25 and 50 cases for Beat the Clock: Typewriter at bronze, Clockwork stamp at silver and Chronometer frame at gold.

    Opens at Shadow Investigator

  • From Memory

Solve it without pencilling in a single hunch.

Turning Hunch on ends it. You’re warned first.

Meet it on 10, 25 and 50 cases for Total Recall: Archive file at bronze, Index card file at silver and Ivory seal at gold.

    Opens at Lead Investigator

  • One Shot

Your first accusation has to be the right one.

A wrong accusation ends it. Before you accuse, the game shows who your board places at the scene.

Meet it on 10, 25 and 50 cases for Dead Eye: Gunmetal frame at bronze, Crosshair seal at silver and Marksman stamp at gold.

    Opens at Lead Detective

How challenges work

One challenge per case

You choose one challenge as you open a new case, and you can’t add one partway through. A label under the case title shows the challenge in play. It changes to “Challenge ended” if you break the rule.

A challenge counts once per case. It earns its bonus point only on the solve that earns the case’s rank points. A replay of a case that has already earned them plays as a normal case, with no challenge to choose, and earns no points. After one wrong accusation, a replay tells the case again with new names and rooms, and can still earn the points and the bonus.

Par times for Against the Clock

Every case has one to three stars for how hard it is within its level. The more stars, the more time you get.

Challenges met also count toward the higher ranks, so the top of the ladder needs every challenge on an Expert case. Meet a challenge again and again and it earns a commendation, in bronze, silver and gold.
